Uses of DOXYBIL-LB
Doxycycline may be prescribed for a variety of susceptible bacterial infections. Depending on the clinical indication, doxycycline products are used for:
- Respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Certain sexually transmitted bacterial infections, including Chlamydia trachomatis
- Rickettsial infections
- Certain skin infections
- Severe acne as adjunctive therapy
- Selected infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Certain tick-borne infections
- Selected infections where doxycycline is used as an alternative when other antibiotics are unsuitable
The exact indication should be determined by the physician based on the infection and bacterial susceptibility.
Antibiotic Stewardship
Doxycycline should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. Unnecessary antibiotic use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
How DOXYBIL-LB Works
Doxycycline
Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibacterial. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with the bacterial ribosome, thereby limiting bacterial growth.
Its antibacterial activity covers a range of organisms, although susceptibility varies by organism and geographic region. Culture and susceptibility testing may be appropriate for certain infections.
Lactic Acid Bacillus
Lactic Acid Bacillus is a probiotic component included in the formulation. Probiotic organisms are commonly used to support the balance of intestinal microorganisms during antibacterial treatment.
The probiotic component should not be considered a substitute for appropriate antibiotic therapy or medical treatment.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage and duration of DOXYBIL-LB should be decided by the treating physician according to:
- Type and severity of infection
- Patient age and body weight
- Clinical condition
- Causative organism
- Kidney and liver considerations where relevant
- Patient response to treatment
Do not self-medicate or change the prescribed dose.
Doxycycline tablets should generally be taken with an adequate amount of water. Patients should follow the specific administration instructions supplied by their healthcare professional.
Important Administration Consideration
Absorption of doxycycline can be reduced by preparations containing aluminium, calcium, magnesium, iron or bismuth. These products may therefore need to be separated from doxycycline according to professional advice.
Possible Side Effects
Possible adverse effects associated with doxycycline include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Headache
- Photosensitivity
- Difficulty or discomfort with swallowing
- Skin reactions
More serious reactions can occur less commonly, including severe skin reactions, antibiotic-associated diarrhea and intracranial hypertension.
If severe diarrhea, significant skin reactions, breathing difficulty, severe headache or visual disturbances occur, medical attention should be sought promptly.
Precautions and Warnings
Tetracycline Allergy
DOXYBIL-LB should not be used by patients with a known hypersensitivity to doxycycline or other tetracycline-class medicines.
Pregnancy and Tooth Development
Tetracycline-class medicines can affect tooth development and bone growth. Doxycycline use during pregnancy and in young children requires careful medical assessment. Current prescribing information contains specific age- and indication-related considerations.
Therefore, pregnant patients, breastfeeding patients and parents/guardians of children should consult a healthcare professional before use.
Photosensitivity
Doxycycline can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight and may produce an exaggerated sunburn reaction. Patients should take appropriate precautions against excessive sun exposure.
Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea
Persistent or severe diarrhea during or after antibacterial treatment should be medically evaluated because Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea can occur with antibiotic therapy.
Drug Interactions
Inform the doctor about all medicines, vitamins and supplements being taken.
Important interactions include:
- Antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium
- Iron-containing preparations
- Bismuth-containing products
- Certain anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine and phenytoin
- Barbiturates
- Certain anticoagulants
Antacids and mineral preparations can reduce doxycycline absorption, while some enzyme-inducing medicines can alter doxycycline exposure.
Storage
Store DOXYBIL-LB according to the storage conditions printed on the product packaging.
General precautions:
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Protect from excessive heat and moisture.
- Keep the tablets in their original blister until use.
- Keep out of reach of children.
