Uses and Benefits of HBMUL-FZ Tablets
1. Iron supplementation
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen. It also contributes to myoglobin, cellular metabolism, physical growth and neurological development.
2. Supports folate requirements
Folate is involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and in amino-acid metabolism. It is particularly important for normal cell division.
3. Zinc nutritional support
Zinc is involved in numerous enzymatic processes and contributes to DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, cell division, signalling, growth and tissue maintenance.
4. Combined nutritional formulation
HBMUL-FZ provides iron, folic acid and zinc in one tablet, which may be useful when a healthcare professional determines that supplementation of these nutrients is appropriate.
5. Supports normal red blood cell formation
Iron and folate both have important roles in normal blood-cell production. However, anemia can have several different causes, so supplementation should be based on appropriate clinical assessment rather than assuming that every anemia is caused by iron deficiency.
How Does HBMUL-FZ Work?
Ferrous Fumarate
Ferrous fumarate is an iron salt that supplies elemental iron.
The product provides 50 mg elemental iron per tablet. Iron is incorporated into hemoglobin and supports oxygen transport throughout the body. It also participates in cellular energy metabolism and other physiological processes.
Folic Acid
Folic acid is a supplemental form of folate. Folate functions in one-carbon transfer reactions involved in:
- DNA synthesis
- RNA synthesis
- Amino-acid metabolism
- Cell division
Adequate folate is therefore important for tissues with rapidly dividing cells.
Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in hundreds of enzyme systems. It contributes to:
- DNA synthesis
- Protein synthesis
- Cell division
- Cellular signalling
- Normal growth and development
- Wound healing
HBMUL-FZ Dosage and Administration
Take HBMUL-FZ according to the dosage and duration prescribed by a doctor or qualified healthcare professional.
The appropriate regimen can depend on:
- Hemoglobin level
- Serum ferritin and iron status
- Folate status
- Dietary intake
- Age
- Physiological requirements
- Underlying cause of deficiency
- Other medicines and supplements being taken
Because each tablet contains 50 mg elemental iron, HBMUL-FZ should not be treated as an ordinary low-dose multivitamin.
How to take
Swallow the film-coated tablet with water according to the prescribed schedule.
Iron absorption can be affected by certain foods, minerals and medicines. Calcium supplements, for example, are generally best separated from iron supplements when both are required.
If gastrointestinal discomfort occurs, a healthcare professional may advise taking iron with food, although food can reduce iron absorption.
Side Effects of HBMUL-FZ
Iron supplements can cause gastrointestinal effects, particularly at higher doses. Possible effects include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Abdominal discomfort
- Stomach upset
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dark-coloured stools
The NIH notes that supplemental iron doses of 45 mg/day or more can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and constipation in some people.
Zinc-related effects
Higher zinc intake can cause:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Dark stools are also commonly seen with oral iron supplementation.
Precautions and Warnings
Consult a healthcare professional before taking HBMUL-FZ if you have:
- Iron overload disorders
- Hemochromatosis
- Repeated blood transfusions
- Significant gastrointestinal disease
- Kidney or liver disease
- A history of intolerance to oral iron
- Anemia of an undetermined cause
Do not take unnecessary iron
Not all anemia is caused by iron deficiency. The cause of anemia should be evaluated before prolonged iron supplementation.
Keep away from children
Accidental ingestion of large quantities of iron-containing products by children can result in serious poisoning. Keep HBMUL-FZ safely out of children’s reach.
Folic Acid Dose Consideration
HBMUL-FZ contains 750 mcg folic acid per tablet.
For adults, the general upper intake level for folic acid from supplements and fortified foods is 1,000 mcg/day. This does not mean that higher doses can never be prescribed; healthcare professionals may use higher doses for specific clinical indications.
Therefore, patients should avoid adding another high-dose folic acid supplement without professional advice.
Drug and Nutrient Interactions
Levothyroxine
Iron can significantly reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Some levothyroxine product information recommends separating administration from iron supplements by at least 4 hours.
Levodopa
Iron supplements can reduce levodopa absorption and may decrease its effectiveness.
Quinolone antibiotics
Zinc can interfere with absorption of quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin. Taking the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after zinc can minimize the interaction.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Zinc can also interfere with absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Appropriate separation is recommended.
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce absorption of penicillamine. These products should generally be separated by at least one hour.
Calcium supplements
Calcium may interfere with iron absorption. If both products are required, taking them at different times can help minimize this interaction.
Who May Be Prescribed HBMUL-FZ?
A healthcare professional may consider an iron-folic acid-zinc formulation when supplementation of these nutrients is clinically appropriate.
Evaluation may include:
- Hemoglobin
- Serum ferritin
- Iron studies
- Folate status
- Dietary assessment
- Clinical history
- Evaluation of possible causes of iron deficiency
This is particularly important because low hemoglobin does not by itself establish iron deficiency.
