Uses and Benefits of HBMUL-XT Suspension
1. Iron supplementation
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the red blood cell protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues. It also contributes to myoglobin, cellular metabolism and normal growth and development.
2. Folic acid supplementation
Folate is required for DNA and RNA synthesis, amino-acid metabolism and normal cell division. Adequate folate is particularly important for tissues with rapidly dividing cells.
3. Supports normal red blood-cell formation
Iron and folate both have important roles in normal blood-cell production. However, anemia has multiple possible causes, so the underlying cause should be evaluated before long-term supplementation.
4. Convenient liquid dosage form
HBMUL-XT is supplied as an oral suspension, providing a liquid alternative when a suspension formulation is preferred.
5. Chocolate-flavoured formulation
The product is presented as a chocolate-flavoured suspension, which may make administration more convenient for patients who prefer a liquid formulation.
How Does HBMUL-XT Suspension Work?
Ferrous Ascorbate
Ferrous ascorbate provides iron in a form suitable for oral supplementation.
Iron is required for:
- Hemoglobin formation
- Oxygen transport
- Myoglobin function
- Cellular metabolism
- Normal neurological development
- Physical growth and development
Each 5 mL of HBMUL-XT Suspension provides 30 mg elemental iron.
Folic Acid
Folic acid is a supplemental form of folate. Folate-dependent reactions are involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and in amino-acid metabolism. Folate is also essential for normal cell division.
Each 5 mL provides 550 mcg folic acid.
HBMUL-XT Suspension Dosage and Administration
Use HBMUL-XT Suspension according to the dosage prescribed by a physician or qualified healthcare professional.
The appropriate dose and duration can depend on:
- Age
- Hemoglobin level
- Serum ferritin and iron status
- Folate status
- Dietary intake
- Clinical condition
- Severity of deficiency
- Other medicines and supplements being used
Because this is a therapeutic iron preparation, the dose should not be increased without professional advice.
How to Take
- Shake the bottle well before use.
- Measure the prescribed quantity using an appropriate measuring device.
- Do not use an ordinary household spoon for accurate dosing.
- Follow the prescribed frequency and duration.
Iron absorption can be affected by other foods, minerals and medicines. Calcium-containing supplements, for example, may interfere with iron absorption and may need to be taken separately.
Side Effects of HBMUL-XT Suspension
Iron-containing preparations can cause gastrointestinal side effects.
Possible effects include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Abdominal discomfort
- Stomach upset
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dark-coloured stools
Gastrointestinal effects are among the more common issues associated with oral iron supplementation.
Dark-coloured stools
Dark stools can occur during oral iron supplementation. However, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or suspected gastrointestinal bleeding should be medically evaluated.
Precautions and Warnings
Before using HBMUL-XT Suspension, inform your healthcare professional if you have:
- Iron overload disorders
- Hemochromatosis
- Repeated blood transfusions
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Significant gastrointestinal disease
- Anemia of unknown cause
- Previous intolerance to oral iron
Do not use unnecessary iron
Not all anemia is caused by iron deficiency. Other causes include vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, chronic disease, blood loss and inherited disorders.
Therefore, prolonged iron supplementation should be based on appropriate clinical evaluation.
Keep out of reach of children
Accidental ingestion of large amounts of iron can cause serious poisoning in children. Store the product safely and keep it out of children’s reach.
Folic Acid Consideration
Each 5 mL of HBMUL-XT contains 550 mcg folic acid.
For adults, the general upper intake level for folic acid from supplements and fortified foods is 1,000 mcg/day, although higher doses can be used under medical supervision for specific clinical indications.
Do not add another high-dose folic acid supplement without discussing it with a healthcare professional.
Drug and Nutrient Interactions
Levothyroxine
Iron can reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Patients taking thyroid replacement medicines should discuss appropriate separation of doses with their doctor or pharmacist.
Quinolone antibiotics
Iron can reduce absorption of certain quinolone antibiotics. The medicines may need to be taken at separate times.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Iron can also interfere with absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Appropriate dose separation may be required.
Calcium supplements
Calcium can interfere with iron absorption. If calcium and iron supplementation are both required, they may need to be taken at different times.
Antacids and acid-reducing medicines
Some medicines that alter stomach acidity can affect iron absorption. Discuss regular antacid or acid-suppressing medication use with your healthcare professional.
Methotrexate
Folic acid can interact with methotrexate depending on the indication and treatment regimen. Patients taking methotrexate should consult their treating physician before changing folic acid supplementation.
Who May Be Prescribed HBMUL-XT Suspension?
A healthcare professional may prescribe an iron and folic acid formulation when supplementation is clinically indicated.
Assessment may include:
- Hemoglobin
- Serum ferritin
- Iron studies
- Folate status
- Dietary history
- Clinical symptoms
- Evaluation of possible blood loss or other causes of deficiency
A low hemoglobin value alone does not establish that iron deficiency is the cause.
