Uses and Benefits of HBMUL-XT Tablets

1. Iron supplementation

Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the red blood cell protein responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues. Iron is also involved in myoglobin, cellular function, physical growth and neurological development.

2. Folic acid supplementation

Folate is required for DNA and RNA synthesis and amino-acid metabolism and plays an important role in cell division.

3. Zinc nutritional support

Zinc is involved in hundreds of enzymatic processes and contributes to DNA and protein synthesis, cell signalling, growth, development and wound healing.

4. Supports nutritional requirements during increased demand

A combination of iron, folic acid and zinc may be prescribed when a healthcare professional determines that supplementation is appropriate based on dietary intake, laboratory findings or increased nutritional requirements.

5. Convenient combination formulation

HBMUL-XT combines iron, folic acid and zinc in a single film-coated tablet, simplifying supplementation when all three nutrients are indicated.

How Does HBMUL-XT Work?

Ferrous Ascorbate

Ferrous ascorbate provides iron in the ferrous form. Iron is incorporated into hemoglobin and myoglobin and participates in oxygen transport and cellular metabolism. Vitamin C-containing iron forms can also support absorption of non-heme iron.

The product specifically provides 100 mg elemental iron per tablet.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate. Folate functions as a coenzyme in one-carbon transfer reactions involved in DNA/RNA synthesis and amino-acid metabolism.

Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous cellular processes, including:

  • Enzyme activity
  • DNA synthesis
  • Protein synthesis
  • Cell division
  • Cell signalling
  • Normal growth and development
  • Wound healing

HBMUL-XT Dosage and Administration

Take HBMUL-XT according to the dosage prescribed by a doctor or healthcare professional.

The appropriate duration and frequency depend on factors such as:

  • Hemoglobin level
  • Iron status
  • Ferritin and other laboratory parameters
  • Folate status
  • Dietary intake
  • Age and physiological requirements
  • Underlying cause of nutrient deficiency

Because this formulation contains 100 mg elemental iron, it should not be treated as an ordinary low-dose multivitamin.

Iron supplementation should ideally be based on an appropriate clinical assessment, particularly when used for suspected or confirmed iron deficiency.

How to Take HBMUL-XT

Follow the instructions provided by the healthcare professional.

Iron absorption can be affected by other foods, minerals and medicines. Calcium, for example, may interfere with iron absorption, and experts recommend separating calcium and iron supplements when appropriate.

If gastrointestinal discomfort occurs, the healthcare professional may advise taking iron with food, although food can reduce iron absorption.

Do not crush or chew the film-coated tablet unless specifically instructed.

Side Effects of HBMUL-XT

Iron supplements can cause gastrointestinal side effects, particularly at higher doses. Possible effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Stomach upset
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dark-coloured stools

High doses of supplemental iron are more likely to cause gastrointestinal effects.

Zinc can also cause nausea, gastric discomfort, vomiting or loss of appetite at excessive intakes.

Dark stools

Dark or black stools can occur during oral iron supplementation and do not necessarily indicate a serious problem. However, unusual or severe gastrointestinal symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Precautions and Warnings

Before taking HBMUL-XT, inform your healthcare professional if you have:

  • Iron overload or iron-storage disorders
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Repeated blood transfusions
  • Significant gastrointestinal disease
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • A history of severe intolerance to oral iron
  • Anemia that has not been evaluated

Important: Do not take unnecessary iron

Not all forms of anemia are caused by iron deficiency. For example, anemia associated with chronic disease may not respond simply to additional iron, and the underlying condition needs to be addressed.

Keep away from children

Iron-containing products can cause serious poisoning if accidentally ingested in large quantities by children. Keep HBMUL-XT safely out of children’s reach.

Folic Acid Dose Consideration

HBMUL-XT contains 1.5 mg (1,500 mcg) folic acid per tablet.

The general adult upper limit for folic acid from supplements and fortified foods is 1,000 mcg/day, although this limit does not apply in the same manner to individuals taking higher doses under medical supervision.

Therefore, the 1.5 mg folic acid dose should be regarded as a therapeutic/high-dose formulation rather than an ordinary low-dose multivitamin, and it should be used according to professional advice.

Drug and Nutrient Interactions

Levothyroxine

Iron can reduce absorption of levothyroxine and may reduce its effectiveness. Product information for levothyroxine commonly recommends separating administration from iron-containing supplements.

Levodopa

Iron supplements can reduce absorption of levodopa.

Quinolone antibiotics

Zinc can interfere with absorption of quinolone antibiotics when taken at the same time. NIH guidance recommends taking the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after a zinc supplement when applicable.

Tetracycline antibiotics

Zinc can also interact with tetracycline antibiotics and reduce absorption of both the mineral and antibiotic when taken simultaneously.

Penicillamine

Zinc can reduce absorption of penicillamine. These products should be separated according to healthcare professional advice.

Methotrexate

Folate supplementation can interact with methotrexate. Patients receiving methotrexate, particularly for cancer treatment, should discuss folic acid supplementation with their treating physician.

Calcium supplements

Calcium may interfere with iron absorption. If calcium and iron supplements are both required, they may need to be taken at different times.

Who May Be Prescribed HBMUL-XT?

A healthcare professional may consider an iron-folic acid-zinc formulation when supplementation of these nutrients is clinically indicated.

Assessment may include:

  • Hemoglobin
  • Serum ferritin
  • Other iron-status markers
  • Folate status
  • Dietary assessment
  • Clinical history

The cause of iron deficiency should also be evaluated rather than simply treating low hemoglobin with iron without determining the underlying reason.
