Uses and Benefits of HBMUL Syrup

1. Iron supplementation

Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues. Iron is also involved in myoglobin, cellular metabolism, physical growth and neurological development.

HBMUL provides 32.25 mg elemental iron per 15 mL.

2. Supports folate requirements

Folate participates in one-carbon metabolism and is required for DNA and RNA synthesis and normal cell division.

3. Vitamin B12 supplementation

Vitamin B12 is required for:

  • Normal red blood-cell formation
  • DNA synthesis
  • Normal development and function of the nervous system
  • Certain metabolic reactions

The product contains 15 mcg cyanocobalamin per 15 mL. Cyanocobalamin is a commonly used form of supplemental vitamin B12.

4. Zinc nutritional support

Zinc is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes and contributes to DNA and protein synthesis, cell division, wound healing and normal cellular function.

5. Combined hematinic formulation

HBMUL combines iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 and zinc in one liquid formulation. This can be useful when a healthcare professional determines that supplementation of these nutrients is appropriate.

How Does HBMUL Syrup Work?

Ferric Ammonium Citrate

Ferric ammonium citrate provides iron in a ferric iron-containing salt. The iron ultimately contributes to the body’s iron pool and is required for hemoglobin and myoglobin formation and various cellular processes.

HBMUL provides:

32.25 mg elemental iron / 15 mL

Iron deficiency is one cause of anemia, but anemia can also result from folate deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic disease and other conditions. Therefore, the cause of anemia should be established before prolonged supplementation.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is the supplemental form of folate. Folate functions as a coenzyme/co-substrate in reactions involved in nucleic-acid synthesis and amino-acid metabolism. It is particularly important for cells undergoing division.

Cyanocobalamin – Vitamin B12

Cyanocobalamin is converted in the body to biologically active forms of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 supports normal red blood-cell formation, DNA synthesis and nervous-system function.

Zinc

Zinc participates in numerous enzymatic reactions and contributes to protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, cellular signalling and cell division.

HBMUL Syrup Dosage and Administration

Use HBMUL Syrup according to the dosage prescribed by a physician or qualified healthcare professional.

The appropriate dosage may depend on:

  • Age
  • Hemoglobin level
  • Iron status
  • Serum ferritin
  • Folate status
  • Vitamin B12 status
  • Dietary intake
  • Clinical condition
  • Other medicines and supplements being taken

Because the syrup contains 32.25 mg elemental iron per 15 mL, the dose should not be increased without professional advice.

Administration

  • Shake the bottle well before use.
  • Measure the prescribed dose using a suitable measuring device.
  • Do not use an ordinary household spoon for accurate dosing.
  • Follow the prescribed duration of treatment.

Iron absorption can be affected by other nutrients and medicines. For example, calcium and iron supplements are generally recommended at different times when both are being used.

Side Effects of HBMUL Syrup

Iron-containing preparations can cause gastrointestinal side effects.

Possible effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Stomach upset
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dark-coloured stools

The likelihood of gastrointestinal effects can increase with higher iron intake.

Zinc-related effects

Excessive zinc intake can cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite

Dark stools

Dark stools are commonly associated with oral iron supplementation. However, unusually severe abdominal symptoms or suspected gastrointestinal bleeding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Precautions and Warnings

Before taking HBMUL Syrup, inform your doctor if you have:

  • Iron overload disorders
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Repeated blood transfusions
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Significant gastrointestinal disease
  • Anemia of unknown cause
  • Known intolerance to oral iron

Do not use unnecessary iron

Not all anemia is caused by iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is common, but anemia can also result from vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, chronic inflammation, blood loss and other conditions.

Keep away from children

Iron-containing products can cause serious toxicity if large quantities are accidentally swallowed by children. Keep the bottle safely out of children’s reach.

Folic Acid Dose Consideration

HBMUL provides 1.5 mg (1,500 mcg) folic acid per 15 mL.

The adult upper intake level for folic acid from supplements and fortified foods is generally 1,000 mcg/day, although higher amounts can be used under medical supervision for specific clinical indications.

Therefore, patients should not add another high-dose folic acid supplement without consulting a healthcare professional.

Drug and Nutrient Interactions

Levothyroxine

Iron can reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Patients taking thyroid replacement therapy should discuss appropriate separation of administration with their doctor or pharmacist.

Quinolone antibiotics

Zinc can interfere with the absorption of quinolone antibiotics. Zinc supplements are generally separated from these antibiotics according to the medicine’s prescribing instructions.

Tetracycline antibiotics

Zinc can also interact with tetracycline antibiotics and reduce absorption of both the antibiotic and zinc when taken together.

Penicillamine

Zinc can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of penicillamine. The two should be taken separately according to professional advice.

Calcium supplements

Calcium can interfere with iron absorption. If calcium and iron products are both required, they may need to be taken at separate times.

Metformin and acid-suppressing medicines

Long-term use of some medicines, including metformin and gastric acid inhibitors, can affect vitamin B12 status.

Always tell your healthcare professional about all prescription medicines, OTC medicines, vitamins and supplements you take.

Who May Be Prescribed HBMUL Syrup?

A healthcare professional may prescribe an iron-folic acid-vitamin B12-zinc formulation when supplementation of these nutrients is clinically indicated.

Assessment may include:

  • Hemoglobin
  • Serum ferritin
  • Iron studies
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Dietary history
  • Clinical symptoms
  • Evaluation of possible blood loss or other causes of deficiency

A low hemoglobin value alone does not establish that iron supplementation is appropriate.
