Uses of Lizobees Dry Syrup

Linezolid may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections including:

  • Pneumonia, including community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Complicated skin and skin-structure infections
  • Selected uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections
  • Infections caused by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE), including cases with concurrent bacteremia

The exact indication depends on the patient’s age, infection, causative organism and susceptibility.

Important limitation

Linezolid should not be used for Gram-negative infections. Antibiotics should be used only when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected.

How Lizobees Works

Linezolid

Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibacterial agent. It works by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis through interaction with the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Lizobees Dry Syrup should be determined by the treating physician based on the child’s body weight, age, type of infection and clinical condition.

For reference, the current prescribing information lists 10 mg/kg orally every 8 hours for paediatric patients from birth through 11 years for several approved indications; uncomplicated skin infections have different age-specific schedules. Therefore, the prescribed dose should not be calculated or changed without medical advice.

Reconstitution

This product is supplied as a dry powder/granule that must be reconstituted before use.

Follow the reconstitution instructions supplied with the specific Lizobees pack. The amount of water required can vary by product formulation and final volume, so do not use instructions from another manufacturer’s linezolid suspension.

After reconstitution, the suspension should be administered using an appropriate measuring device.

Possible Side Effects

Possible adverse effects with linezolid can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Changes in blood counts

More serious reactions can occur, particularly with prolonged treatment, including myelosuppression, peripheral or optic neuropathy and serotonin syndrome.

Seek medical attention if a child develops severe or persistent diarrhea, unusual bruising/bleeding, significant weakness, visual changes or other concerning symptoms.

Precautions and Warnings

Blood Count Monitoring

Linezolid can cause myelosuppression, including thrombocytopenia, anemia, leukopenia and pancytopenia. The prescribing information recommends weekly complete blood count monitoring, particularly when clinically appropriate for patients receiving treatment.

Neuropathy

Peripheral and optic neuropathy have been reported, particularly with treatment extending beyond 28 days. Any new visual symptoms should be evaluated promptly.

Serotonin Syndrome

Linezolid can interact with serotonergic medicines. Patients receiving antidepressants or other serotonergic agents should be assessed by their physician for potential interactions and serotonin-syndrome symptoms.

MAOI Interaction

Linezolid is contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within two weeks of taking an MAOI.

Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea

Persistent or severe diarrhea during or after antibiotic treatment should be reported to a healthcare professional because antibiotic-associated C. difficile diarrhea can occur.

Drug Interactions

Before using Lizobees, inform the doctor about all medicines the child is taking, particularly:

  • Antidepressants and other serotonergic medicines
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Certain opioid medicines
  • Other medicines that may affect blood pressure or blood counts

A physician or pharmacist should review the complete medication list before treatment.

Storage

For the dry syrup, keep the bottle tightly closed and store according to the storage instructions printed on the specific product label.

After reconstitution, follow the product-specific instructions regarding storage and period of use. Official linezolid suspension labeling generally requires protection from light/moisture and specifies storage conditions for the constituted suspension.

Keep out of reach of children.
